🌱 Growing Minds in Our School Garden

Beginning this school year, all students will participate in our Garden & Library Enrichment Program each week.

Students will rotate weekly between:

• 📚 Library & School Garden
• 💡 Library & Makerspace

Why a School Garden?

At Monterey Heights STEAM Academy, learning extends beyond the classroom walls. Our school garden serves as a living laboratory where students explore science, engineering, mathematics, technology, art, and environmental stewardship through meaningful, real-world experiences.

🌿 Hands-On Learning

Students investigate plant life cycles, ecosystems, weather patterns, soil health, and nutrition by actively planting, observing, maintaining, and harvesting in the garden.

🔬 Integrated STEAM Learning

The garden naturally connects every area of STEAM:

• Science: Plant biology, ecosystems, pollinators, and environmental science
• Technology: Digital observation tools, data collection, and research
• Engineering: Designing irrigation systems, garden structures, and problem-solving solutions
• Arts: Nature-inspired creativity, garden design, and artistic expression
• Mathematics: Measuring growth, collecting data, graphing results, and calculating area and volume

💡 Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Students learn to think like scientists by asking questions, making observations, testing ideas, and solving authentic challenges such as conserving water, improving soil health, and supporting beneficial insects.

🌎 Environmental Stewardship

Our garden helps students develop an appreciation for nature while learning sustainable practices including composting, recycling, water conservation, and caring for local ecosystems.

🥕 Healthy Living

Students discover where food comes from while exploring nutrition, healthy eating habits, and the importance of growing fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

🤝 Collaboration & Community

The garden is a shared learning space where students work together, develop leadership skills, and strengthen connections with teachers, families, and community partners.

🌼 Life Skills That Last

Working in the garden teaches responsibility, perseverance, patience, teamwork, and pride as students care for living things and celebrate the results of their hard work.

Our school garden is much more than a place to grow plants—it is a place where curiosity flourishes, creativity blooms, and students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to become thoughtful innovators and responsible citizens.

Through our Garden & Library and Library Makerspace rotations, every Monterey Heights Eagle will have opportunities each week to explore, discover, create, collaborate, and grow in ways that make learning meaningful, engaging, and unforgettable.
